Router-on-a-stick
·
Router-on-a-stick is
nothing but a setup between Layer 2 switch and router connected using Ethernet link
(VLAN trunk link).
·
If there are 3 VLANs
configured in a switch, these 3 VLANs cannot communicate with each other using
L2 switches as they are in 3 different subnets. Layer 2 frames can only communicate inside
VLAN. Only routers or layer 3 switches can route packets between VLANs.
·
A Layer2 switch with 3 VLANs
is connected to the router using a single physical link. This design is sometimes
called Router-on-a-stick.
·
Router-on-a-stick design is
not used in L3 switches. Layer 3 switches act as a Layer 2 LAN switch as well
as a Layer 3 router.
·
Layer 3 switches are also
known as multilayer switches.
